How to Grow Dahlias

Plant tubers 4–6 inches deep after all danger of frost has passed. Wait to water until sprouts reach about 2 inches above the soil to prevent rot (rain is fine). Dahlias thrive in full sun (6+ hours) and well-draining soil. Once established, water about 2 inches per week and fertilize monthly with a low-nitrogen organic fertilizer. Stake tall varieties at planting time. In colder zones (7 and below), dig up tubers in fall and store for winter.

Grown with Care

All dahlias at Little Lapin Garden are organically cultivated without pesticides or herbicides, grown with love in Littleton, Colorado. Each tuber is hand-dug, cured, and visually inspected for rot and gall, and is verified to have at least one viable eye before shipping.

What to Expect

About Your Tubers

  • Hand-dug, cured, and inspected for quality at Little Lapin Garden in Littleton, Colorado

  • Each tuber is verified to have at least one viable eye before shipping

  • Packed with care and labeled with variety name

  • Tuber size, shape, and texture vary—this is normal and does not affect performance

  • Small tubers can produce excellent plants

  • Minor wrinkling is normal for some varieties

  • White or light bumps on the tuber body are NOT gall - they are called lenticels and are harmless

When Your Order Arrives

  1. Check your package promptly. Pre-sprouted tubers are perishable and more delicate than dormant tubers. Unpack them as soon as possible after delivery.

  2. Inspect each tuber. Every tuber is labeled with its variety name. Check that each one is firm and has a visible sprout. Sprouts may be small or a few inches long depending on the variety. Some wrinkling on the tuber is normal and does not affect viability. If a tuber feels soft, mushy, or shows signs of mold or rot—or if a sprout has broken off completely with no backup eyes visible—contact me within 7 days.

  3. Handle with care. Sprouts can be fragile. When unpacking and planting, handle tubers gently to avoid snapping the sprout. If a sprout breaks but the tuber still has another visible eye, it will likely still grow—just more slowly.

  4. Store properly if you're not ready to plant. Pre-sprouted tubers should be planted as soon as conditions allow. If you need to hold them for a short time, store in a cool location (50–60°F) with indirect light to keep sprouts healthy. Avoid dark storage for extended periods, as sprouts will stretch and weaken reaching for light. Do not refrigerate or freeze. A garage, basement with a window, or cool room works well.

  5. Don't wait too long to plant. Pre-sprouted tubers are ready to grow and shouldn't be stored for more than 1–2 weeks. The sooner they get in the ground (once soil reaches 60°F), the better they'll perform.

  6. Report issues within 7 days of delivery. Contact me with clear photos and a description of any quality or viability concerns. After 7 days, I cannot offer refunds or replacements due to the perishable nature of tubers.

The Little Lapin Garden Guarantee

Every tuber shipped will be:

  • Hand-selected for quality

  • Verified to have a visible eye or sprout

  • True to variety

  • Viable at the time of shipping

Once your tuber arrives with a viable eye, its success depends on proper planting and care.

A Note on Plant Health

Growing dahlias is a labor of love—but even with the best care, plants can sometimes get sick. I take every precaution I can, including culling suspicious plants and sanitizing tools between cuts, but virus and disease are not 100% avoidable in any garden. While I visually inspect each tuber for gall, I don't currently test my tubers or plants for disease.

By purchasing, you accept this reality of growing living things—it's part of the journey we share as gardeners.

If your tuber grows into a plant showing signs of gall or virus, please reach out and let me know. It helps me protect my stock and continue offering healthy tubers to this community. I truly appreciate you being part of that effort.
